How to Get Started Curling

The Calgary Curling Club runs a Curling Academy that holds both Adult and Youth programs. See below for program descriptions and dates and registration information. We also provide private lessons for first time curlers, or curlers looking to improve their game. If you have any specific questions, contact the club via email.

If you are a curler, or have already learned to curl, looking for our league options, please visit our Leagues Page for information on all of our leagues.

Lite Rocks Ages 7 to 11

Two sessions: October – December and January – March.

Registration opens October 6, 2021.

Saturdays 3:00 pm to 3:55 pm for 7 weeks.

In this program participants use “Lite” rocks which are similar in size to regular rocks but are lighter (around 22 lbs) so they require less effort to deliver them. The program consists of instruction and play time in game-like situations but the primary focus is on fun and skill development. Brooms and sliders are provided. All participants must wear helmets and clean, rubber soft-soled shoes. It gets chilly on the ice so please ensure your child is dressed appropriately.

It is expected that an adult responsible for your child be at the club while your child is on the ice.

Big Rock Ages 12 to 17

Adult Learn to Curl

Two Sessions: October – December and January – February.

Registration begins October 6, 2021 (First come first served basis, very popular program)..

Sundays at 12:15pm to 2:15pm for 6 weeks.

This is an introductory instructional program. It is ideal for people with little to no curling experience. Learn the basics in technique, rules, strategy and etiquette. Then, try out your newly acquired skills in game situations. Following this program you should be able to participate in recreational league play.

We will provide the necessary equipment. Participants must wear clean indoor running shoes and warm, loose-fitting clothing.

Adult Greenhorn League

Winter Session: January – February.

Registration begins December, 2021. Details to come.

Saturdays 5-6:30pm for 6 weeks

This adult instructional league is designed to be an introduction to league play for people who have recently taken curling lessons. While the main focus of the league is game-play, there will be instructors present to provide guidance, give pointers and answer questions. The first day of each session will consist of a refresher lesson before heading into a game.

All registrants must have participated in introductory curling lessons such as Learn To Curl, a Curling Crash Course, or private lessons. Participants are required to provide their own curling equipment, which can be purchased or rented from Curler’s Corner, located inside the Calgary Curling Club.

NOTE: Registration is individual, as teams are made up each week to allow players the chance to play and learn all positions. Spares are not required should a participant have to miss a program day
